Editorial Assistant: Thieme Chemistry

Our business is quickly transitioning from book and Journal publishing to content provision in a variety of formats. We are looking for an individual who can drive high-quality English Language Journal content acquisition and product ideas in both the print and the digital world. We are currently searching for an Editorial Assistant.


The Editorial Assistant role will support Editors in the management and development of a group of journals, books and reference works, and the acquisition and launch of new titles. The role involves interactions with editors, authors, reviewers and readers and supporting publishing activities as much as possible.

Support the existing Chemistry products within Thieme as follows:

  • Organizational and editorial support of the in-house editorial teams (Thieme Chemistry Journals and Science of Synthesis), including the monitoring of shared mailboxes
  • Organizing and maintaining files; tracking manuscripts and reviews; Exporting manuscripts from the submission system ScholarOne
  • Preparing manuscripts for copyediting and production; manuscript structuring including ChemDraw graphics work
  • Checking/correcting chemical schemes and structures
  • Inserting galley proof corrections
  • Tracking and processing invoices and payments
  • Keep information resources, including spreadsheets, databases and web pages, up to date as necessary.
  • Support team members in the preparation of publishing reports, journal development plans, proposals and journal tender documents with publisher metrics, for e.g. submissions, citations, usage
  • Conduct data analysis, market research and competitive analyses for a variety of subject areas as required
  • Assist the Editors with the transfer of newly signed journals onto the list and the launching of new titles.
  • Be familiar with publishing ethics best practice, industry-wide standards, relevant discipline-specific standards, and publishing ethics guidelines and escalation procedures set by Thieme Group; Ensure that all permissions have been sought by authors for the work (includes figures, images and text) reported as appropriate

The Editorial Assistant collaborates with:

  • Marketing and sales departments to prepare promotional messages, newsletters and social media campaigns
  • The production department to ensure accurate delivery and ensure on-time publication of high-quality products in print and digital form
  • Editorial colleagues worldwide (Germany, India, China, USA and LATAM) to coordinate development of products to optimize product potential
  • Journals department to build on common networks and to optimize mutual support of periodical and non-periodical publications.

    Engagement and networking:

    • Maintain awareness major initiatives/movements within the academic publishing industry
    • Promote a positive image of the organization with existing and potential partners and clients, and promote a positive image of the Journals Editorial team within the organization

    Required Background:

    • A BSc or MSc Degree in the chemical sciences
    • English fluency is essential (verbal and written)
    • Ability to work to high standards while keeping to deadlines
    • A keen eye for details and excellent organizational skills
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Strong customer orientation and a collaborative team worker
    • Great analytical and IT Skills with advanced knowledge of MS Office and ChemDraw; basic knowledge of XML would be desirable
    • Previous publishing experience would be advantageous
